How to Winterize a Convertible in 5 Easy Steps

The best way to extend the life of your convertible car is to perform routine maintenance including winterizing the convertible top. This is the time of year that is most important for keeping your convertible top looking its best and lasting the longest. The steps we’ve put together will show you how to identify issues and prepare your convertible soft top for the cold air and harsh winter weather that’s to come.

Visual Inspection

Before spraying and scrubbing your convertible top, give it a thorough visual inspection to check for any damage to the fabric, seams and fasteners. Make sure there is no cracking or tearing of any components and, if there is, make sure to replace those parts immediately. It’s important to check both the exterior and interior of the convertible top to identify any and all potential issues. Make sure to use a flashlight and check every inch for mold and mildew, as well.

Brush it Off

You’ll want to use a quality horsehair brush to remove any dirt and dust that has built up over time. You should always take this step before washing the convertible top to ensure your top is free from debris before you begin scrubbing.

Clean it

The next step in winterizing your convertible top is to clean it. There are a number of great products out there for cleaning convertible soft tops. Many cleaners are safe for all types of vinyl and canvas convertible tops, but you’ll want to make sure the cleaner you choose meets your specific needs. Once your top has been thoroughly cleaned, use a fabric protectant that will waterproof your top. While this blog is about winterizing your convertible, this process should be done at least twice a year.

Cover it

Keeping your convertible covered is a great way to protect it from cold winter air and snow, as well as from possible falling sticks and debris. If you cannot get your convertible under a carport or in a garage, investing in a quality car cover will not only protect your convertible top but will protect your car’s interior from any possible leaks, as well as the paint job from any scrapes or scratches.

Keep it Clean

You’ll want to keep your convertible top clean at all times. If your convertible top is covered in leaves, debris, rain or snow, clean it off immediately! Those are the things that contribute to mold and mildew growth, as well as stains and discoloration. Never use anything with sharp edges to clean off snow from your convertible top, as it could possibly leave markings on the fabric.

These are just a few best practices for winterizing your convertible top. Make sure to only use approved products when performing maintenance on your convertible top and follow instructions carefully. Share your tips with us in the comments. We’d love to hear your ideas!

  6. Hey! Thanks for the info. I like when bloggers write only the most important information, briefly and clearly. Unfortunately, in the modern world there are so many fake bloggers who use their articles only for advertising. And it's very sad. By the way, I found very interesting information here https://www.faxvin.com/blog . Who else can advise good articles about cars?
