Tips for Keeping Your Convertible Top Clean


Owning a convertible is a privilege that many people take advantage of every day. There’s nothing like enjoying the freedom of the road from the comfort of a convertible sports car. As much fun as they are, keeping a clean convertible top takes a level of care that goes a bit beyond the care needed for non-convertibles.  Is it worth it? You bet it is! With a little care, caution and the right convertible top cleaners, you’ll be able to extend the longevity of your convertible top while maintaining its beauty and shine. We’ve put together some tips for convertible top care that we feel will help you keep your convertible top looking its best for years to come.



  • Don’t Park Under Trees – This may seem like a no-brainer, but everything from leaves and sticks to tree pollen, sap and bird droppings will eat away at and can permanently stain your convertible top. Do your best to always find covered parking, open parking or use a cover to protect your convertible top from the outdoor elements. If your convertible top does become covered with pollen, sap or other debris, immediately rinse off the top and make sure the debris is fully removed and dry once you’re done.nly
  • Use Approved Cleaners - Many convertible tops are made from vinyl and other fabrics. While these convertible top materials are extremely durable, they will also need to be cleaned with cleaners that provide the important chemicals and oils that will help extend the life of the convertible top. Using un-approved cleaners may strip away the very protective coating your top needs to maintain its shine and elasticity. We recommend using RaggTopp cleaners and protectants or a similar cleaner specific designed to clean the type of material from which your convertible top is made.
  • Always hand-wash Your Convertible – Convertible tops have become extremely durable, but automatic car washes are not designed for convertible cars. Your convertible top will need to be cleaned using a soft scrub brush to avoid tearing or scratching the material. It’s also important to make sure no cleaners are left to pool on the convertible top, which can cause discoloration.
  • Provide Regular Cleaning and Inspection – To keep your convertible top looking its best, it should be washed/cleaned at least once a month. Even if there are no visible stains, washing and waxing will provide the protection and care your top needs to keep its shine for years to come. Regularly inspecting your convertible top for any tears, snags or imperfections will help you fix problems before they spread and cause additional damage to the convertible top and your car’s interior.
